Granville is the kind of town where you still run into people you know on Prospect Street. That small-town feel does not happen by accident. It is built, and kept alive, by the choices people make about where they spend their time and money. Here is our guide to shopping local in Granville, and why it matters.
Why shopping local matters
When you shop at an independent store, more of your money stays in the community. It pays local wages, supports nearby farms and makers, and keeps storefronts in the village open and lively. A town full of independent shops is a town people want to walk around in, visit and come back to.
Shopping local is also more personal. The people behind the counter know the products, and often know the person who made them. You can ask questions and get real answers.
How local makers end up on our shelves
At Granville General Store, a meaningful part of what we carry comes from local makers. Many of them sell with us on consignment. That means the maker keeps ownership of their goods while we display and sell them in the shop, and the maker is paid when something sells. It lets small producers get their work in front of customers without the cost of opening their own storefront, and it lets us carry a changing mix of handmade and small-batch goods you will not find anywhere else.
When you buy a consigned item, the majority of what you pay goes straight back to the person who made it.
