If you have been curious about refilling but were not sure where to start, this one is for you. A refillery is one of the simplest ways to cut down on single-use plastic at home, and the refillery at Granville General Store is set up to make your first visit easy.
What is a refillery?
A refillery is a station where you bring your own clean, empty containers and refill them with everyday household and personal care essentials. Instead of buying a new plastic bottle every time you run out of dish soap or shampoo, you reuse the one you already have. You only pay for the product you take home, and nothing goes in the trash.
What can you refill?
Our refill wall carries everyday liquids for the house and for you, including:
- Liquid laundry detergent
- Dish soap
- Multi-surface cleaner
- Hand soap
- Shampoo and conditioner
- Body wash
- Lotion
Our refill products come from Rustic Strength, a family-run maker of small-batch, plant-based cleaning and body care essentials. Not sure what to try? Ask about small sample sizes so you can test a product before you commit to a full bottle.
How refilling works, step by step
1. Grab a clean, empty container
Any container works as long as it is clean, dry and has a lid: a mason jar, an old soap pump, a bottle from a previous refill. If you do not have one, we have amber and clear glass bottles available in the shop.
2. We weigh it empty
This is called the tare weight. We record it so you are only charged for the product, never the container. No surprises at checkout.
3. Fill and record
Fill up at the station, as much or as little as you want, and jot down the item number from the tag.
4. Weigh again and pay for what you use
Bring your filled bottle to the register. We weigh it again and you pay by weight. That is it. You leave with a full container and zero new plastic.
Tips for your first refill
- Start with what is running low. Dish soap and hand soap are easy first refills.
- Use what you already own. The most sustainable bottle is the one already under your sink.
- Label your bottles. A piece of tape and a marker makes it easy to tell shampoo from body wash.
- Forgot your bottle? No guilt. Grab one of ours and bring it back next time.
Ways to make refilling even easier
Once you are hooked, ask about Drop and Go: leave your clean empties with us and we will refill them and have them ready for you to pick up. We also now have Refill Rewards, a punch card where every refill counts toward a free bottle and refill.
