Bring the Bottle You Already Have: A Letter About Our Refillery

August 31, 2026Granville General Store

Dear neighbor,

We started the refillery at Granville General Store as a corner. A shelf, really. A few bottles, a few pumps of soap, and we honestly were not sure anyone would use it. Turns out people did. So now it is a whole wall, and it has become one of our favorite parts of the store.

It is not really about the soap

Here is the thing about the refillery that we did not expect: it is not really about the soap. It is about not buying a new plastic bottle every time you run out of something you already own a perfectly good bottle for.

It is also about taking exactly as much dish soap as you actually need, instead of whatever size a manufacturer decided to sell you. If you only want a little laundry detergent to try it out, take a little. If you go through hand soap like water, fill up the big jar. You decide the amount, not the label.

The best bottle is the one you already have

People often ask which container they should buy before their first visit. Our honest answer: probably none. The best bottle to bring in is not one of ours. It is the one you already have.

  • That old olive oil bottle
  • The lotion pump you cannot bring yourself to throw away
  • A jam jar or a mason jar
  • A bottle from a previous refill

If it holds liquid and has a lid, it will work. Just make sure it is clean and dry. We keep bottles on hand if you want one, but the whole point kind of falls apart if buying something new is the first step.

How a refill visit works

A refill trip is simple, and it takes about five minutes once you have done it once:

  • Bring what you have. Any clean, dry container with a lid.
  • Weigh in. We weigh your container empty so you never pay for the bottle.
  • Fill up. Choose your product at the refill wall and fill as much or as little as you like.
  • Weigh out and pay for what you took. That is it.

There is no subscription, no minimum, and no guilt trip if you forget your bottle and just want to buy a new one. We would rather you start somewhere than not start at all. If you want to see it in action first, our refillery page walks through the basics.

Small habits, less waste

None of this is going to change the world overnight, and we are not going to pretend it will. But every bottle that gets refilled instead of tossed is one less piece of plastic in the bin, and that adds up over months and years. For a lot of our neighbors in Granville, it has quietly become part of the weekly routine, like the farmers market or the walk to the post office.

If you have not tried it yet, no pressure. But it is worth five minutes next time you are in.
