How to Burn a Beehive Candle by the Hour (and Make It Last 50 Hours)

July 18, 2026Granville General Store

There is something satisfying about watching a slow evening actually pass. That is exactly what Candle by the Hour was built for, and it is one of our favorite things on the shelf at Granville General Store.

A candle that keeps you honest about time

Each Candle by the Hour candle is marked in hour increments, so you can see, inch by inch, exactly how long you have been sitting still. It turns lighting a candle into a small ritual: you notice the time you are giving yourself instead of losing track of it.

Our favorite is the 50 Hour Beehive Candle. It is a nod to old-fashioned honeycomb molds, shaped to burn slow and steady through long evenings, with 50 hours of burn time marked right on the wax. It is our best-selling shape in the collection, and the slowest burner of the bunch.

Before you light

  • Trim the wick to 1/4 inch every time. A short wick burns cleaner and slower.
  • Set it somewhere flat, away from drafts. Drafts cause uneven burning and smoke.
  • Have a long-reach lighter handy. The hive sits deep, so a standard lighter can be awkward.

While it burns

  • Let the first burn go edge to edge. Before you blow it out the first time, let the melted wax reach the edges. This keeps the whole candle burning evenly for its full life.
  • Know your pace. Each inch burns about 20 minutes, so three inches gets you roughly an hour.
  • Watch the hour marks as it goes. That is the whole point.
  • When you hit the base, bring the holder back in for a refill.

Keep the vessel, swap the wax

One of the things we love most about Candle by the Hour is that you do not have to throw anything away when the candle is done. Beehive refills are available, so you keep the vessel you already love and simply swap in new wax. It is the same thinking behind our refillery: keep the container, replace only what you use.

Why we like beeswax candles

We carry both beeswax and soy candles from makers who skip the harsh stuff, so you can enjoy a candle without worrying about what comes with it. Beeswax in particular burns slowly and has a naturally warm, honeyed glow. Paired with a candle that literally counts the hours, it is about as cozy as a weeknight gets.

Perfect for long evenings

The Beehive was made for porch evenings you do not want to end too soon, but it is just as good on a dinner table in November or a bedside table on a slow Sunday. It also makes a thoughtful gift for anyone who could use a reminder to slow down.
